There is a mineral (vitamin?) deficiency called pica that can affect humans and animals which will male them try to "supplement" by eating strange things, including dirt.

The bag thing is worrisome, as accidental swallowing could cause harm to the intestines unless it was able to pass through easily.

I have a cat that constantly gnaws on hard plastic and wood, but she doesnt' try to eat it; I have another that makes confetti out of paper, but doesn't swallow it, just makes spit balls out of it.

It is fairly common for cats to try to pee on plastic bags,...note that the bags and many rub backings are made..I'm not sure how to say this,.."made of" or "processed with" a product called urethane...note the h"ure" as it tends to smell like pee to cats so they want to stake their territory by peeing on top of it. But the eating of it is a new one on me. I just would be very very carerul not to leave any around where they can get to them.

As to diet, IAMS used to be a top quality; then they sold out to Proctor and Gamble and it has gone down hill, not to mention animal testing that is "alleged" to be animal cruelty.

I would suggest you take a look at http://www.naturapet.com/tools/ This is a producer of a very high quality cat food which I now feed my cats,..their coats changed completely; there are others, such as Eagle Pack, that are also high quality; Science Diet, IAMS, Purina, IMO, is not. But if you go to the website, with some poking around you will find a food comparison chart. You can select several foods and put them in, then you will be able to see what is and is not in your cat food brands, that should or should not be there. It's not just about their brand, it's a great educational tool.
